Since THE CODE is a whopping 5:39 in length, I am not going to go a whole lot into the plot… just watch it your damn self, ya lazy! I even added a link to it at the bottom of the page to save your lazy fingers from having to click away from Ryan’s Reviews to search for it. I’ll just sum up the plot for you: zombies and slashers and Bigfoot, oh my!

THE CODE is a slick, funny short that is gaining recognition. It has won awards at film fests and as of this review holds a 93% Funny rating on Funny or Die, and that’s from over 13,000 votes so it’s not just the cast and crew’s opinion! THE CODE has a lot of good things going for it. The dialogue is fun (“I’ve never dated a porn star before.” “Huh, well I’ve never dated a… what is it you say you do again?”). The acting performances are really strong across the board, and I was especially impressed with Voss as Vanna Helsing and Brandt as Shaun the Zombie. The makeup, while nothing outrageous or overly complex, is well done. Finally, the production quality is high: the sound is really well-recorded and crisp, the music is fitting, and the video is high-quality, uses focus and composition really well, and is pleasing to the eye.

The only real drawbacks I had with THE CODE are pretty minimal. First, it’s really short, which is not necessarily a bad thing in and of itself, but I felt that this film could have been more, done more, and impressed me more with a bit heftier run time. With it’s 5:39 length, it really gets right to it and gets done with it (so there is really good pacing, but the pacing is super-quick). Secondly, this is a joke I’ve seen before. I can’t hold that against THE CODE too much, because truthfully with the millennia of storytelling under humankind’s belt, there’s really no way to be truly, 100% original on pretty much anything anymore. THE CODE brought to mind a film that I have reviewed before, NECROVILLE (review here), which is different in a lot of ways, but shares the idea of bringing together various genres of horror antagonists into one film.

A Killer! With a weed whacker!!

Overall, THE CODE was a lot of fun. It was a really well made short film that delivers both some good dialogue jokes, some good situational jokes, some gore, and (spoiler, but truthfully, you’re just gonna watch it right now anyway, right?) a hot chick kicking ass. That’s always a recipe for a win, and it gets bonus points for having a slasher carrying a weed-whacker. I look forward to seeing what this production team does in the future, and I would love to see something a little bit heftier from them!

Overall 8 / 10
